Caruna – Backup power generators take over in the event of a national grid failure

Caruna distributes electricity and maintains an electricity network for customers all over Finland. Caruna has two distribution companies – Caruna Espoo Oy and Caruna Oy – the latter of which operates mainly in sparsely populated areas. Millog is responsible for servicing Caruna’s backup power generators and therefore plays a significant role in enabling safe and stable electricity distribution in Finland.

Access to electricity is one of the key criteria for the functioning of society, and electronic systems are vital for our well-being. Caruna supplies electricity to more than 690,000 customers in southern, southwestern and western Finland, Joensuu, Koillismaa and Satakunta. The company has several backup power generators, which are mostly used during scheduled maintenance. The company also relies on its backup generators in the event of a national grid failure. Some of the generators are integrated and some are mobile.

“Caruna is responsible for around one-fifth of Finland’s distribution network. Millog is our partner for the annual servicing and repairs of our backup power generators. The partnership started in 2015, and we have been extremely happy with the service. We did not previously have a maintenance schedule for the generators, which made unexpected situations challenging. Now, however, we can rest easy knowing that our systems are always in working order and will power up without any issues if we need them”, says Jukka Maunu, Caruna’s Sourcing Manager.

Comprehensive reports with up-to-date information

Caruna’s partnership with Millog has been effortless. In addition to servicing the electricity company’s systems, Millog has provided user training to contractors who operate the systems in connection with troubleshooting issues with the electricity network. According to Maunu, Millog provides a punctual and transparent service. Reports drawn up of each annual service clearly explain what has been done and how the life cycle of the system is looking.

“The information in Millog’s reports helps us to plan investments in new systems. An honest expert’s opinion keeps us up to date on the situation. The reports always provide very thorough descriptions of the current status of each system and of the works that have been done, as well as suggestions of what should be done next”, Maunu explains.

A steady supply of parts for all systems

Caruna has several different kinds of backup power generators, but Millog’s long experience and technical know-how cater reliably for all makes and models. Although some of the generators are already approaching the end of their useful lives, Millog has been able to secure a steady supply of parts for these older units as well and to provide expert advice in case replacements are needed.
