The Auction of Decommissioned Museum-Age Tanks of the Finnish Defence Forces Raised 740 500 Euros

Millog organised an auction of museum-age tanks and other old armaments on behalf of the Finnish Defence Forces on Friday 11 October 2024 in Tampere. The auction generated sales contracts worth 740 500 euros. The proceeds will be forwarded to the Finnish Defence Forces in full.

Millog organised an auction of museum-age tanks and other old armaments decommissioned by the Finnish Defence Forces on Friday, 11 October 2024, in Kalkku, Tampere. The auction included nine British Charioteer and Comet tanks, as well as field guns, cannons and anti-aircraft guns.

The auction generated sales contracts worth 740 500 euros. Proceeds from the auction will be directed to the Finnish Defence Forces in full. Of the tanks, one was sold to Finland and eight abroad.

A total of 17 bidders and their assistants participated in the auction, including individuals, organisations, and museums representatives. Five of the bidders were from Finland and 12 from abroad. All the equipment auctioned on Friday were sold as scrap.

As a strategic partner of the Finnish Defence Forces, Millog regularly auctions discarded material in Kalkku, Tampere, such as vehicles and other workshop and transport equipment. However, auctions involving old armaments are rare. Last year, a unique auction of weapons from the Second World War was held in Hämeenlinna. The previous auction of decommissioned Comet and Charioteer tanks occurred in 2007 in Ruovesi.

The Finnish Defence Forces used Charioteer tanks between 1958 and 1980, and Comet tanks from 1960 to 1970. These vehicles were mainly used for training purposes. The Finnish Defence Forces removed these types of tanks from their inventory in 2006. Since then, the Military Museum has used them, for example, as an exchange items for material from foreign museums. The museum eventually proposed the tanks for auction, as it no longer had need for them.
