Fortum – Recycling and waste business relies on Millog to service backup power generators and fire-fighting pumps

Fortum’s recycling and waste team provides recycling and waste management services throughout Finland and the Nordic countries with the exception of Iceland. Its waste-to-energy unit in Riihimäki handles municipal solid waste and hazardous waste, and recycles and processes plastics. Millog is the maintenance provider for the Riihimäki unit’s backup power generators and fire-fighting pumps. The partnership has been smooth sailing since its beginning almost a decade ago.

The Riihimäki unit of Fortum’s recycling and waste business is home to a plastics refinery, a high-temperature incineration plant and two open-hearth furnace plants. The unit also supplies district heating and electricity to residential and commercial properties in the area. The unit has four backup power generators, two feedwater pumps and two fire-fighting pumps for emergencies. Millog performs the annual and scheduled servicing of these safety-critical systems and also takes care of repairs if the systems malfunction. The main focus of the partnership is on annual servicing, but Millog has also helped Fortum’s recycling and waste team to modernise its equipment.

“We used to use different suppliers for different systems, but the arrangement was impractical. Millog delivers the full package.”

Timo Kapulainen, Maintenance Engineer

“We used to use different suppliers for different systems, but the arrangement was impractical and created unnecessary work. Millog delivers the full package: servicing, parts and improvement suggestions for all our systems. The high standard of Millog’s service makes scheduling easier and allows us to coordinate works more efficiently. The partnership has also been a big time-saver for me personally”, says Maintenance Engineer Timo Kapulainen from Fortum Recycling and Waste Solutions.

Having a single supplier servicing systems of multiple different makes is possible thanks to Millog’s versatile expertise. According to Kapulainen, what makes Millog so reliable is its ability to service both diesel and electrical systems. Millog’s know-how of control systems and the security of parts supply also add to the smoothness of the service.

“The standard of work is what ultimately matters the most, and we have been extremely satisfied. We can rest easy knowing that our safety-critical systems will work as intended if we need them.”

“The standard of work is what ultimately matters the most, and we have been extremely satisfied. We can rest easy knowing that our safety-critical systems will work as intended if we need them. Having even the slightest doubt that the systems might not do what they are supposed to in all circumstances is not an option. Our backup generators are our lifeline in the event of power outages, for example. Millog gives us comprehensive reports on the status of our systems in connection with each service so that we always know what needs to be done next. Our organisations work extremely well together”, Kapulainen says.

Long partnership between neighbours

Building and nurturing long-term partnerships is important to Millog. The partnership with Fortum Recycling and Waste Solutions was established almost a decade ago. In addition to Millog’s versatile expertise, Kapulainen likes the camaraderie that the two organisations, which are practically neighbours, share.

“Millog is a big company with a lot of expertise.”

“Millog is a big company with a lot of expertise. The fact that they have premises in the local military base here in Riihimäki is also great for us. I personally find it heartwarming and precious that Millog employs local professionals. They therefore also help to improve the status of young people in and around Riihimäki who are only just starting their careers”, Kapulainen says.
