On 22 June 2021, Minister of Defence Antti Kaikkonen authorised the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command to procure a mid-life upgrade for the Army’s CV9030 infantry fighting vehicles. This project safeguards the life cycle of the system. BAE Systems Hägglunds Ab, the manufacturer of the vehicles, will subcontract a large part of this work from Millog Oy, a strategic partner of the Finnish Defence Forces.
It is planned that the mid-life upgrade will be designed and developed in Sweden. The prototypes will also be produced there. The pre-production series and serial work will in turn be done by Millog in Finland. The work to be performed by Millog will have an employment effect of around 23 person-years. The infantry fighting vehicles were acquired from Sweden between 2002 and 2007. With this mid-life upgrade, the Finnish Army will secure their availability until the 2030s. The upgrades will enhance the general availability and maintainability of the main infantry fighting vehicle fleet, develop in-service safety and upgrade both system technology and software.
“It is important that we have domestic maintenance capabilities and expertise in exceptional circumstances – and that we bolster them further. To ensure readiness, it is also important that the vehicles stay in Finland while the upgrade work is going on.”
Rainer Peltoniemi, Colonel
“It is important that we have domestic maintenance capabilities and expertise in exceptional circumstances – and that we bolster them further. To ensure readiness, it is also important that the vehicles stay in Finland while the upgrade work is going on. After this upgrade, we will be able to implement more extensive vehicle performance improvements and update them later during their life cycle”, says Inspector of the Infantry, Colonel Rainer Peltoniemi.
“We enhance performance together – this mid-life upgrade is an excellent example. The Swedish company BAE Systems Hägglunds will design the mid-life upgrade and Millog will carry out the work – providing the Finnish Defence Forces with higher performance”, says Development Director Pekka Saarinen.
“We are developing maintenance (including maintenance planning and control) on a long-term basis in collaboration with the Finnish Defence Forces to ensure cost-effective service provision of the highest possible standard. This agreement will help us to safeguard Finnish security of supply even more effectively”, says Sami Pitkänen, CEO of Millog Oy.
